App vs. Mobile Site.

If you’re planning to establish a mobile presence for your business or organization, one of the first questions that will come to mind is whether you want to create a mobile application for users to download or a mobile website, or maybe even both. Mobile websites and apps are very similar; however, each one has its own unique advantages and disadvantages.

Both apps and mobile sites are accessible on smartphones, such as iPhone, Android, Blackberry phones and most handheld devices and tablets. A mobile site is a compact version of a website just as you would normally view on a computer or laptop. Just like a standard website, a mobile site can display text, videos, images and links. However, unlike a traditional website, a mobile site can also access mobile-specific features, such as click-to-call (to dial a phone number) or provide turn by turn directions by connecting to a phone’s GPS system. A mobile site is an easily accessible portal in which users from multiple smartphone systems can reach. Mobile sites provide a quick connection to your business without having to download anything onto your mobile device. On a mobile site, updates are hassle free for users and are shown instantaneously on any phone, whereas for an app, an update would have to be downloaded.

Apps are actual applications that have to be downloaded and installed on your mobile device. Depending on your preferences, you can have the option of providing the app for free or charging a small fee for downloading. The app may pull content and data from the Internet or it may download the content so that it can be accessed without an Internet connection. One downfall for an app is in some cases, multiple apps have to be designed to reach users from different phone systems. Also, as a company, you would have to be responsible for encouraging users to download any changes or updates to your app. However, because of the growing number of apps and app users, the encouragement won’t take much. Apps are more trendy compared to mobile sites and are more helpful when trying to actually engage the user. Apps can be used to integrate games, surveys, and contests with your products and increase customer interaction with your business. Similar to a mobile site, apps can also have features such as click-to-call or connect to a user’s GPS system.

Either choice can be a great asset to any business. Expanding your mobile presence is very crucial and a much needed move. In order to make a great choice, you should know what your goals are and what you want your results to be.
